I tried syncing the device with a totally different server and this worked OK, I found that the second server had Domino 8.5.2 FP1 installed the original server was base 8.5.2.
Upgraded the server to 8.5.2 FP1 and tried again, still no sync. So I deleted all the profiles on the device and then re-created them. Now it is working perfectly again.
Not sure if it was the FP1 or the delete and re-create profiles that fixed it.
